Each year around Oscar time many people make a mental list of all the movies that have been nominated that they just have to see before the awards. Many people actually reach the point of renting or purchasing the movies, and then just never get around to watching them. Others just wait until the awards are over and concentrate on the big winners, or look up, and later forget about, movie schedules on their satellite TV. Whatever your individual style, the Oscar nominees are a great place to start when looking for what to watch tonight. These films tend to be classics, timeless, and intriguing to a wide audience. Whether planning family night, date night, taking a break from sports, or just enjoying a quiet evening in on the couch, old Oscar nominees are a great place to start. Try some of these favorite Oscar rewinds, the nominees for “Best Picture” from the year 2000.
1. Gladiator (Best Picture Winner 2000)
While on his deathbed, Emperor Marcus Aurelius of Rome names his victorious General Maximus (Russell Crowe) as his successor. When the Emperor’s power-hungry son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) learns of this perceived betrayal, Maximus and his family are ordered to be executed. Although Maximus tries to hurry back to Spain to save his wife and son from certain death, he arrives too late. In his grief he is easily captured and forced into a life of slavery. Along the way he is trained to fight as a gladiator, and is eventually sent back to Rome to “fight” in a series of gladiator games held by new emperor Commodus. Upon arriving in Rome Maximus contacts Lucilla, the sister of Commodus, and a power struggle begins to form between the standing Emperor and the former General-turned gladiator who truly deserves the title. As Maximus gains fame and notoriety for his skill and bravery amongst the people of Rome, the tension only mounts. A true delight for the eyes and ears, this beautifully shot film makes a great home-movie choice in high definition.
2. Chocolat
When Vianne Rocher and her young daughter arrive in a small village in rural France, their seemingly well-intentioned chocolate shop is met with much animosity from the townsfolk. Vianne’s audacious act of opening a sweets shop during Lent is widely frowned upon, that is until her charming disposition and tasty treats begin winning her friends. With the Mayor of the town standing firm in his conviction that she must be run out on a rail, the story takes an unexpected twist when a band of river-drifters set up residence near the village.
3. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
This magical feast for the senses follows the famous warrior Li as he seeks to recover his stolen, powerful, ancient sword while traversing the breathtaking landscapes of Western China. A seamless blend between humanity and magic, the story is as much a tale of love and loss as it is one of exciting roof-top fighting and action sequences, not to mention an excellent choice to show off brand new HD TVs.
4. Erin Brockovich
When single mother Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts) decides to push her way into a job at a law firm, the same law firm that recently lost her case regarding an auto accident, not a soul takes her seriously. Ready to take matters into her own hands, Erin becomes heavily involved with a case surrounding the suspicious past of land once owned by the Pacific Gas & Electric Company. Without even glancing back Erin proceeds to lead the law firm into one of the largest class action lawsuits against a multi-billion dollar corporation in United States history.
5. Traffic
This contemporary portrayal of America’s drug war follows several intertwining vignettes through the lives of various characters touched by the drug trade. A conservative politician battles with his own daughter’s drug addiction, DEA agents protect a witness, a wife delves into her husband’s drug operation, and a law enforcement official in Mexico plays by his own rules in this dark, rattling tale, wrenched out of an insider’s prospective.
